Kumihimo is the Japanese art of braiding. Originally used to braid lacing for the Samurais’ armor, today it is a popular jewelry making technique. WARNING: KUMIHIMO IS VERY ADDICTIVE. It’s fast, easy, and fun!
Level: Beginner – No previous braiding or jewelry making experience required.
Technique Learned: Basic 8-Strand Round Braid using a foam kumihimo disk
Length of Class: 2 Hours
What Will I Actually Make in Class? When finished you’ll have a braid about 24″ long. This is enough for a necklace and bracelet set. In class most students get about 8″ – 16″ braided. Everyone will leave class with one end of their braid bound with thread. The teacher will demonstrate how to cut off the starting knot and how to glue on a endcap. If you choose, you may glue on an endcap in class; however, because the glue needs to dry overnight, it is recommended that you wait until you get home to glue your endcap on.
How often is this class offered? Two times each month, generally on a Friday or Saturday.
How much does the class cost? The class tuition is $20 per person. Tools and materials are not included in the tuition. There are also two supply kits available for purchase. The Kumihimo Curiosity Kit is $20 and includes all the materials needed for Kumihimo 101.
