February 23-26, 2017
Are you ready to accelerate you kumihimo designs? Are you looking for the techniques that take a design from good to great? Do you want to become a master of composition and color?
Then I invite you to peek behind the curtains and step into my world. Kumihimo Design: Mastering Composition & Color is a three-day master class experience I’ve designed as part of our kumihimo retreat in Sonoita, Arizona February 23-26, 2017.
In the first session, The Toolbox, you’ll refine your understanding of traditional design concepts such as rhythm, symmetry, balance, and proportion, but this goes far beyond an art appreciation 101… You’ll master the how and the why. You’ll be able to make design decisions with intention so that your elements work they way you want them to.
In the second session, The Power Tools, you’ll learn how to artfully edit your work before you even pick up a bead! Imagine the time and frustration you’ll save when you can judge your designs on paper and know they’re good before you begin braiding!
In the third session, The Prism, you’ll master color selection by examining the effect of different bead finishes on color perception. The secret to pleasing palettes is balance and you’ll apply your knowledge of proportion to create color combinations that sing and mix beads as though they were paint.
All three days you’ll be working hands-on writing your own jewelry designs, critiquing your work, prototyping, and braiding. This is an amazing experience that will change your approach to design no matter what level you’re starting at!
Imagine Your Kumihimo Retreat
Our meals and workshops will take place at the lovely After Midnight Art Ranch in Sonoita, Arizona. For reference, it’s about an hour and 15 minute drive from Design & Adorn. If you’re flying in from out of state, we can pick you up at the Tucson airport.
You’ll arrive Thursday evening and get settled into your room at either After Midnight Ranch or the neighboring Xanadu Ranch or Stage Stop Inn. Then relax and mingle in the dining room or out on one of the lovely balconies or patios. Perhaps enjoy a drink before dinner. Margaritas, anyone?
We’ll start the party with our Welcome Fiesta! We’ve met each other online already in our private retreat FaceBook group, so there’s no need to feel shy around these beading buddies! After the party winds down, you’ll retreat to your private bedroom and have sweet dreams of kumihimo.
Friday morning we’ll start the first workshop session after breakfast. You’ll explore the math of pattern, proportion, and design in Kumihimo. After our fabulous lunch we’ll continue the workshop. Our evenings are reserved for dining and merry making! You might braid after dinner or maybe you’ll unwind with a glass of wine? Enjoy the time with your new friends and soak in the gorgeous views of the Santa Rita mountains.
Saturday follows the same format as Friday with our workshop focus shifting to the art and science of color theory. You’ve been experimenting with different design concepts and now your plan is starting to take shape! Once again you enjoy a gourmet dinner and an evening reveling in comradery and artistic inspiration. Your mind is really spinning now with all sorts of braiding possibilities.
Sunday morning after breakfast we have our last workshop session. You may be putting the finishing touches on your master piece or it may still be in progress, but either way you leave bursting with fresh ideas and the confidence to create your own designs. After our last lunch together we say our goodbyes and return home.

Testimonials from the October retreat…
“I truly enjoyed my experience during the retreat. The new kumihimo instructions were a new challenge I enjoyed very much. The stay was wonderful. Ate way too much. Linda and Michelle couldn’t have been nicer. They made the experience like a small vacation for all of us.
Wonderful food and new friends.
Slept like a baby.
Just LOVED it!”
“I thought this course was fabulous. I had a little trouble following the Fibonacci numbers when you went through the examples in class. But I went through an example with a lot of help from you and then another example with a little help from you, and I have it now. I appreciate having something that took a lot of work on my part. I loved everything else in the class as well and feel much more confident and creative in my ability to design. Sorry, no constructive criticism, it was great!”
